Locations

Guilford County Schools serves 1160 four year olds in 75 developmental pre-K classrooms located in 48 elementary schools across Guilford County. Children offered pre-K placement are assigned to pre-K classrooms based on attendance zone for kindergarten. Information about attendance zones can be obtained by contacting the Student Assignment Office at 370-8303 or go to the GCS School Locator.

If there is not a pre-K classroom in your attendance zone elementary school, you may designate a school during the screening appointment where you would like your child to attend if offered pre-K placement.

Calendar and hours of operation

The preschool program begins on the first instructional days for students with a transition week where teachers visits each child at home, parent orientation meetings are held at the school and children have a staggered entry classroom transition day for the full instructional day with half of his/her classmates.

After the transition week, pre-K operates during regular school hours, and follows the GCS school calendar for teacher workdays and other school holidays. Note: Year-round schools operate according to their published school calendar. The preschool staff (one teacher and one assistant) serves 15 to 18 children.

Transportation

Transportation is provided to pre-K beginning October only if space is available on regular school buses serving particular neighborhoods. GCS Transportation determines whether space is available and trains parents/guardians in Child Safety Restraint training before a pre-K child may begin riding the bus.
