Recognitions

GCS Employee of the Month for October 2007
The board recognized Leigh Hebbard, assistant principal at Eastern Guilford High, as the district’s October Employee of the Month.

GCS Volunteer of the Month for October 2007
The board recognized Wanda Cornwell, a volunteer at Alderman Elementary, as the district’s October Volunteer of the Month.

2007 GCS Principal of the Year and Finalists
The board recognized Valerie Akins, principal at Aycock Middle, as the district’s Principal of the Year. The board also recognized Revonda Johnson as the district’s secondary Principal of the Year, as well as finalists Grenita Lathan, Darcy Kemp and Pam Misher.

The board approved the following items on the consent agenda:

Staff Reports

Approval for Naming of the New Wing at Oak View Elementary
The board voted to name the new wing at Oak View Elementary Doris T. Davis Hall, with the amendment that Doris T. Davis be consulted regarding whether her middle initial should be included, as presented by Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer.

Approval for Naming of the New Gymnasium at Northwest Guilford High
The board voted to name the Northwest High gymnasium Roger L. Nelson Gymnasium, as presented by Leo Bobadilla, chief operations officer.

Diversity Office Update
Monica Walker, diversity officer, presented to the board an update on the diversity office activities.  

Eastern Guilford High School Cash Flow
The board approved a phased replenishment of funds as proposed by Sharon Ozment, chief finance officer. Funds will be temporarily transferred from the existing capital improvement projects to the Eastern High project, with the board having the option to revisit this once the language for a resolution is finalized. The resolution will address how the funds are to be replenished by the Board of County Commissioners.

On Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 a.m., the board will hold a special called meeting for the purpose of considering funding issues for Eastern High and such other financial matters as may come before the board. The meeting will take place in the Board Room of the Administrative Offices, 712 N. Eugene St., Greensboro, N.C.

Advanced Learners Program
Dr. Mack McCary, chief academic officer, presented to the board an update on the Advanced Learners program.

Board Discussion

North Carolina State Board Association (NCSBA) Conference Delegates
Chairman Duncan led the board in a discussion of NCSBA delegates. NCSBA will hold its annual conference on November 5-7, 2007 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The board approved for the following board members to serve as voting delegates at the conference: Dr. Walter Childs, III, Garth Hébert, Dot Kearns and Dr. Nancy Routh.

Guilford County Board of Education meetings are broadcast live on GCSTV 2 (cable channel 2) and re-air the day after the meeting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. and the Saturday following the meeting at 1 p.m.
