What Do School Counselors Do?

School counselors work with teachers to provide classroom lessons and school-wide programs related to the Guidance curriculum in the state Standard Course of Study.  They meet individually with students to assist them with educational planning and to provide career information.  School counselors provide confidential individual and small group counseling and consult with parents, teachers, and community agencies in order to assist students and their families.  It is this component for which school counselors have received specialized graduate level training.  Finally, school counselors provide system support by coordinating programs and outreach activities in the community to assist with the development of students.

Additional information on the role of school counselors can be found at http://www.schoolcounselor.org/content.asp?pl=325&sl=133&contentid=240
