Guilford County Schools (GCS) was named the Outstanding Employer of the Year at the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce 2008 Business Awards. GCS received the award in the large employer category.
The award, given by the Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities and the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, was given for the district’s effort to hire and facilitate employment for persons with disabilities.
“As a district, it is an honor to receive the Outstanding Employer of the Year award,” said Dr. Peggy Thompson, GCS chief human resources officer. “GCS’ success is largely due to the dedicated teachers and staff, whose rich diversity enhances the learning environment for our students.”
LaKisha Tharrington, rehabilitation counselor for North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Services, nominated GCS for this award. "Guilford County Schools is very open to hiring individuals with disabilities and they are willing to provide accommodations, if deemed necessary, in order for the individual to be successful on the job,” Tharrington said.
The Mayor’s Committee for Persons with Disabilities is a coalition of businesses, human service agencies and individuals of all levels of abilities. The committee works to enhance awareness, education, social and employment opportunities in an effort to promote inclusion and reduce barriers.
