Policies have been adopted by the Guilford County Board of Education to serve as guides for this progressive, innovative, and goals oriented school system and can be changed only through official Board action. All school system personnel are expected to adhere to and follow these policies.
Each policy has been assigned a descriptor code consisting of two or more letter-combinations, which classifies that policy into one of ten subject-area categories. This classification system closely parallels the classification system developed and used by the National School Boards Association.
Likewise, the administration has been charged with the responsibility to develop appropriate Administrative Procedures to implement the policies adopted by the Board of Education. Administrative Procedures do not require action by the Board of Education, but must be followed by all school personnel until such time as they are changed. These Administrative Procedures are identified using the same descriptor codes followed by the suffix "P." (Example: Policy AFC is the Board's policy governing emergency closing of schools. Administrative Procedure AFC-P is the administration's procedure that implements that policy.) However, some policies do not have a corresponding administrative procedure. Also, some administrative procedures do not have a corresponding policy.

Public Comments
In accordance with Board Policy BD, Policy Development, the Board encourages the general public to provide input and advice on proposed Board policies. When new or revised policies are recommended by the Board, they are post on the district website for a 21-day public comment period. In addition, the Board will seek input from interested parties during this comment period by posting the proposed policy in the schools and at each central office. Once the comment period has ended, all input will reviewed and considered for possible policy revision. At the next appropriate Board meeting, the policy will be presented to the Board for a second reading. Once a final version has been adopted, the policy will be effective as of that date.
