History

Why a Teacher Supply Warehouse?
In 2004, GCS began exploring a better way to distribute community donations to our schools. Often, a business or group will have items to donate because of moving an office or changing a company name or logo, or they may have a school supply drive and would like the district to decide where to best use the items collected. While we greatly appreciate the donations, we quickly run out of space to sort and store items until schools can pick them up.

Also, according to a survey conducted by the National School Supply and Equipment Association, teachers can easily spend as much as $800 per year of their personal money on supplies for their classrooms. This combined with the generosity of our community underscores the need for a Teacher Supply Warehouse.

The need for a warehouse became crystal clear in 2006 when a local company donated seven pallets of pens – that’s more than 425,000 pens! Telling the story of this and other donations sparked interest with our community partners - the Guilford Education Alliance, the Welfare Reform Liaison Project and Leadership Greensboro. These groups are now working together to make the GCS Teacher Supply Warehouse a reality.
